Does COB LED Strip Have Absolutely No Light Spots?

Linear and very fine light lines require an even distribution of light with no visible diode dots or dark areas. Cob LED strips utilize advanced packaging technology that integrates an extremely large number of LED chips together. Compared to traditional SMD led strips, COB technology dramatically improves the light uniformity of the flex strip.

Although cob led light strip is known for its even spread of lighting, it doesn’t mean that any cob strip will have a very superior spotless light performance. The ability of on-board COB light strips to present smooth light effects lies in their high-density LED chip arrangement and light diffusion envelope. 

If the COB lighting strip has only few LED density in one meter or one foot, then the COB will still show spot light. Cob PCB Width And Cob LED Cover Width

Some people may think that the width of the cob PCB should be equal to the width of the LED cover layer to achieve an aesthetically pleasing eye-level effect. In order to optimize the luminous efficiency of cob LEDs, the tape’s cover width needs to be moderate to ensure that the LED light chips can be effectively encapsulated while achieving good thermal and optical performance.

If the light sealing layer is too wide, it may lead to multiple reflections and scattering of light, increasing light loss and reducing light output efficiency; while the sealing layer is too narrow, it may not be able to make full use of the LED chip’s light-emitting area.

COB LED sealer width is usually limited by the PCB width of the strip. Under the slim cob led PCB width, the sealing layer width of the LED light chip is usually matched, but some will also leave a little PCB edge to reduce the thermal resistance.

Cob Density vs. Lighting Brightness and Uniformity

We compared the light performance of small 384/m 5mm COB with 480/m 2mm COB in the chart above, and we can see that although the chip density of 2mm COB is higher than 5mm, the light uniformity is not as good as expected. Even though the light chips of COB are arranged very densely, and the distance between two lamp beads under 480/m is only 2mm, the light diffusion is limited by the extremely narrow PCB, so it presents a weak point light phenomenon. But two cob strips with the same specifications, the more chips the more uniform the light.

The problem of heat concentration and uneven light that may arise from ultra led cob slim light strips can be solved by mini aluminum profiles. Waterproof silicone led cob channel is also a good helper in eliminating tiny cob spot light.
