The big difference is the wiring. A WS2801 LED strip uses four wires: power, ground, data, and a separate clock line. The WS2812B only has three wires. That extra clock wire makes the WS2801's data signal much more stable and less timing-sensitive, which is a huge advantage if you're using a slower microcontroller like a basic Arduino or a Raspberry Pi that's busy doing other tasks. It's an older chip, but it's very reliable.

Both WS2801 and APA102 strips use a separate clock line, so they're both very stable. The main difference is that the APA102 has a much higher internal PWM frequency. This makes the APA102 much better for video applications or light painting where you need extremely fast refreshes to avoid flicker on camera. For most general-purpose animation and color effects, the WS2801 is perfectly capable and often a bit more economical.

Because WS2801 LED strips use a standard SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) protocol with data and clock lines, they work with a huge range of controllers. You can solder wires directly to these pads or use 4-pin connectors to rejoin sections. Just make sure your connections are solid; a loose clock or data connection will cause the rest of the strip to fail.

An IP67 rating means the WS2801 strip is protected against dust and can be temporarily submerged in water up to 1 meter deep. Our IP67 strips achieve this by being fully encased in a clear silicone tube. This makes them great for outdoor patios, landscape lighting, or areas that get wet. However, for high-framerate video or professional persistence-of-vision (POV) displays, newer chips like the SK9822 IC or APA102 offer much higher internal PWM frequencies, which results in a cleaner image with less banding or flicker when filmed.
