The flange is your best friend for hiding any imperfections in your cutout. If your router wobbled or your drywall cut isn't perfectly straight, the flange—sometimes called a wing or lip—sits on top and covers the gap. It gives you a clean, professional finish without needing a perfect cut. Flangeless channels demand a perfect groove because there's no lip to hide the edge.
You can, but the strip will likely fail within a couple of years. The aluminum channel is a critical heat sink. Without it, the LEDs overheat, which causes their color to shift and their lifespan to plummet. The channel also protects the strip from dust and physical damage, and the diffuser gives you that smooth, finished look instead of glaring LED dots.
Check the 'Height' dimension on the product page for the specific channel you're looking at. You need to cut a groove at least that deep for the channel to sit flush with the surface. For example, if the channel is 8mm high, your groove needs to be 8mm deep. The flange will cover the edges of the cut, so the width is a little more forgiving.
It's all about how the edge is finished. A flanged channel (this category) has a lip that sits on top of the surface, hiding the cut. It's the most forgiving to install. A flangeless channel sits perfectly flush, which requires a very precise, clean groove. A trimless, or plaster-in, channel has a perforated flange that you cover with drywall mud, making the light source appear to be part of the wall or ceiling itself.
