Frequently Asked Questions About LED Filament Bulbs
Got a question about our vintage-style LED filament bulbs? I've been answering them for 12 years. Here are the most common ones.
Usually, no. LED filament bulbs are designed for atmosphere and decoration, not for high-powered task lighting. Their lumen output is intentionally lower to create that warm, cozy glow. For instance, a 6W filament bulb might give you 600 lumens (a 60W equivalent), which is great for a pendant or sconce. For primary room lighting, you'd want something much brighter.
Not all of them, and this is a common trap people fall into. A non-dimmable bulb put on a dimmer circuit will just flicker or fail. You have to check the product specs. We're very clear on the product page if a bulb is one of our dimmable LED bulbs. If it doesn't say 'Dimmable' right in the title or specs, assume it's for on/off switches only.
Yes, you can, because they generate very little heat compared to their incandescent ancestors. An old 60W incandescent would get dangerously hot inside an enclosed glass shade, but an 6W LED equivalent runs much cooler. This makes them a great, safe choice for sealed pendants, outdoor lanterns, and other tight fixtures where heat buildup used to be a real concern.
It's all about the mood. A clear glass bulb gives you a crisp, clean view of the glowing filaments and produces a straightforward warm white light. A Gold Tint or Amber bulb has a colored coating on the glass itself, which makes the light even warmer and more golden, like candlelight. It's purely an aesthetic choice for enhancing that vintage look, especially when the bulb itself is visible.
It's simpler than it looks. The 'E' stands for Edison Screw, and the number is the diameter of the base in millimeters. E26 is the standard base for most light fixtures in North America. E27 is the standard in Europe; they're almost identical and often interchangeable. E12 is the smaller 'candelabra' base you see in chandeliers and decorative lights. Just check the old bulb you're replacing, the code is usually stamped right on it.
