How to Size Your Controller and Power Supply Correctly
Mismatched components are the most common cause of failure in an LED system. To ensure safety and performance, your controller and power supply must be rated to handle the load of your LED strips. Follow these steps:
- 1. Match the Voltage: This is non-negotiable. If you're using a 24V CCT strip, you must use a 24V controller and a 24V power supply, like one from our MeanWell UL-listed indoor supply range. Using the wrong voltage will destroy the strip, the controller, or both.
- 2. Calculate the Total Amperage: Look at the strip's spec sheet for its power draw in watts per meter (or foot). Multiply this value by the total length of your run. This gives you the total wattage. Now, divide the total wattage by your system's voltage (e.g., 24V) to find the total amps.
- 3. Add a 20% Safety Margin: Never run a power supply or controller at 100% of its rated capacity. It generates excess heat and drastically shortens its life. Always select components rated for at least 20% higher than your calculated amperage. For example, if your strip system draws 8 amps, you should use a controller and power supply rated for at least 9.6 amps (a 10A model would be perfect).

It lets you control the shade of white light. A tunable white (or CCT) LED strip has two sets of LEDs on it: one warm white (like a candle) and one cool white (like daylight). The CCT dimmer works by blending the brightness of these two channels. You can dial in anything from a cozy 2700K warm white all the way up to a crisp 6500K cool white, and every step in between. It gives you total control over the mood of the room.
They use something called Pulse Width Modulation, or PWM. Instead of lowering the voltage, the controller turns the LEDs on and off hundreds or thousands of times per second. To make the light dimmer, it just keeps the LEDs off for a larger fraction of each pulse. Your eyes can't see the flicker, you just perceive a smooth dimming. For CCT, it does this for two channels at once, changing the ratio of warm and cool pulses to blend the final color temperature. That's it.
A full tunable white LED strip control system has four key parts. First, the tunable white LED strip itself. Second, one of these CCT controllers to act as the brain. Third, a way to talk to the controller, like an RF remote, a wall panel, or a smartphone app. And finally, you need a DC power supply with the correct voltage (usually 12V or 24V) and enough wattage to power the whole strip run.
This is a common wiring mistake, so get this one right. The controller always goes *after* the power supply but *before* the LED strip. The order is: Wall Outlet -> Power Supply (converts AC to low-voltage DC) -> CCT Controller -> LED Strip. Never wire a low-voltage DC controller directly to high-voltage AC power. It will be destroyed instantly.

You're seeing the PWM frequency. Standard controllers often use a low PWM frequency (a few hundred hertz) which is invisible to the eye but can be caught by a camera's shutter, creating that flicker or banding effect on video.
