A DC24V plastic shell power adapter is an external AC-to-DC switching power adapter that provides a regulated 24-volt direct current output. AC to DC Switching Power Adapter for LED Strips
The standard AC to DC 24V power adapter for an LED strip plugs into a wall outlet and transforms high-voltage alternating current (AC) into low-voltage direct current (DC). These are the most common type of LED light adapter, intended for indoor residential and commercial projects.
They come equipped with a suite of essential safety features, including automatic cut-offs for overload, over-voltage, short circuits, and high temperatures. Many carry FCC and RoHS certifications, with some models also being UL-Listed, providing third-party verification of their safety and performance.
DC to DC Converters: The Car Power Adapter Solution
A few models here are actually DC-to-DC converters, which function as an LED power regulator for use in vehicles or with battery systems. Instead of plugging into a wall, a unit like our DC12V to DC24V Boost Converter takes a 12V DC input from a car or boat battery and outputs a stable 24V DC. This makes it a true automotive power adapter, allowing you to run 24V LED strips in mobile applications.

First, find the wattage per metre (or foot) on your LED strip's spec sheet. Multiply that by the total length of your run to get the total watts your lights need. Now, here's the important part: add 20% on top. For example, if your strips need 80W, you should get a 96W adapter, not an 80W one. Running a power supply at 100% capacity is the fastest way to kill it.
It's a common point of confusion. An AC power adapter 24V plugs into your standard wall outlet (which provides AC power) and converts it to 24V DC for your lights. A DC-to-DC converter takes one DC voltage and changes it to another—for example, taking the 12V from a car battery and boosting it to a stable 24V DC. They solve different problems, so make sure you're grabbing the right one for your input power source.
It's pretty straightforward. Most of these adapters have a standard DC barrel plug on the output. You'll typically use a female barrel plug adapter that has screw terminals on the other end. Don't do it. You'll send twice the required voltage through the LEDs and they'll burn out, usually within minutes. It might look incredibly bright for a moment, but you're destroying the strip. Warm is okay, but hot to the touch is a warning sign. These adapters work by converting voltage, which generates heat. A good quality adapter like a MeanWell might run at 40-50°C (104-122°F) under load, which will feel quite warm. If it's too hot to comfortably hold, it's likely undersized for the load. That's why we stress the 80% rule—it gives the adapter breathing room and keeps it from overheating.
The IP rating tells you how well the adapter is sealed against dust and water. Most of the plastic shell adapters you see here are IP20 or IP40. The '2' means it's protected from objects larger than 12.5mm (like fingers), and the second digit '0' means no protection from water. They are strictly for dry, indoor use only. If you need to power lights in a damp or outdoor location, you must use a dedicated waterproof 24V power supply.
