It's a combination of two types of lighting in one strip. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue, which you can mix to create millions of colors. CCT stands for Correlated Color Temperature, meaning you also have separate white LEDs, usually one warm white and one cool white. To control all five of these color channels (R, G, B, WW, CW) independently, you need five separate negative wires plus one common positive wire. That's six conductors in total, which is why you need a 6-pin connector to run it all.
Not necessarily. While the 12mm PCB width is the most common spec for a 6-pin RGB+CCT LED strip, you also have to match the type—SMD vs. COB—and the pitch, which is the spacing between the copper contact pads. Some strips have pads that are closer together. Forcing the wrong connector can lead to a bad connection or a short circuit. Always buy the connector designed for your specific strip model.
That's almost always a poor connection on one or more of the pins. A flickering light means a loose contact, and a wrong color means one of the channels (like red or cool white) isn't getting power at all. Open the 6 prong connector's clip and make sure the strip is pushed all the way in. The most common mistake is the pins landing on the solder mask between the copper pads instead of directly on them. Reseat it, make sure it's perfectly aligned, and clamp it down firmly.
Most of our clip-down style 6 conductor connectors are designed for 20AWG or 22AWG wire. Trying to force a thicker wire like 18AWG is a bad idea; the clamp won't close securely, and you'll end up with a loose connection that could fail later. If your project requires a heavier gauge wire for a long run to avoid voltage drop, the best method is to use a connector with a short pigtail of 20AWG wire, and then use a butt splice or other means to join that pigtail to your main, thicker extension cable.
Don't bend the strip itself. Trying to fold a 12mm strip at a hard right angle will damage the circuit board and the LEDs. The proper way to do it is to cut the strip and use a solderless L-shape corner connector. These are small, pre-shaped circuit boards with a 6-pin connector on each arm. You just clip your two strip sections in, and you get a perfect, reliable 90-degree turn without any stress on the strip.
For absolute, maximum long-term reliability, a good solder joint is always better. There's no substitute for it in a mission-critical or hard-to-access installation.
