Think of 3500K as the perfect neutral white. A 3000K light has a noticeable warm, yellowish tint, great for cozy spaces. 4000K is a cool, crisp natural white that can sometimes feel a bit stark. Our 3500K soft white LED strip hits the balance right in the middle—it's clean and bright without being clinical, which is why designers love it for modern kitchens, retail, and offices. It makes whites look white, not yellow or blue.
What is a lumen in lighting? It's the simplest measure of total brightness. More lumens means more light output. For task lighting like under kitchen cabinets, you'll want a brighter 3500K LED light strip, something in the 500-900 lumens per foot range. For accent lighting in a cove or behind a TV, you can get a great effect with 150-300 lumens per foot. Just don't get hung up on watts; lumens tell you how bright the strip actually is.
The relationship of lux in lumen is simple: lumens is the total light the strip puts out, while lux is how much of that light lands on a surface. One lux is equal to one lumen per square meter. So, if you have a 1,000-lumen strip lighting a one-square-meter desk, you have 1,000 lux. If you light a ten-square-meter floor with that same strip, you only have 100 lux. It's why a high-lumen strip is key for task areas.
There's no direct conversion for kelvin in lumen because they measure two different things. Kelvin (K) is the color of the light—3500K is a specific shade of soft white. Lumens (lm) measure the brightness of that light. A 3500K LED light can be dim (low lumens) or incredibly bright (high lumens).
That's classic voltage drop. It happens on every low-voltage DC strip. The longer the strip, the more resistance the copper traces have, and the less power gets to the LEDs at the far end. With a 12V strip, you'll see this after about 16ft (5m). That's why we recommend 24V for most jobs—you can typically run up to 32ft (10m) from a single power feed before you see any dimming. A high-quality 3500K color temp is fantastic for modern living spaces, especially ones with neutral paint, light woods, or stone. It gives a clean, fresh, and spacious feel without the harshness of 4000K. Where 3000K can make a room feel a bit too yellow, 3500K renders colors more accurately and feels bright and inviting. It's really the sweet spot between cozy and clinical.
They're just two ways of making a 3500K light. An SMD (Surface Mount Device) strip has individual LED chips spaced out along the board—you can see the dots. A COB (Chip on Board) strip has tiny LEDs packed together under a solid line of diffuser, creating a completely seamless, dot-free line of light right from the source. For direct-view applications or installs with shallow diffusers, COB is the way to go.
First, check if your 16ft LED tape light is 12V or 24V. Second, find its wattage per foot (or meter) on the spec sheet. Multiply that by 16.4 feet (which is 5 meters). Now, add 20% to that total as a safety buffer—you never want to run a power supply at 100% load. For example, if your strip is 4.4W/ft, a 16.4ft reel uses 72W. Add 20% (14.4W), and you get 86.4W. So, you'd need a 24V power supply rated for at least 90W or 100W.
