The DMX512 standard specifies a 5-pin XLR connector, but only pins 1 (Ground), 2 (Data-), and 3 (Data+) are used for the primary signal. Pins 4 and 5 were reserved for a second data link. We sell simple adapters to connect them since the important pins match up perfectly.
The official DMX512 standard sets the maximum length for a DMX cable run at 300 meters, which is just under 1,000 feet. If you're using high-quality, low-capacitance cable, you can sometimes push that a little further. For runs longer than that, you'll need to add a DMX signal booster or an optically isolated splitter to regenerate a clean signal for the next segment.
It's a standard pinout that you need to get right. Pin 1 is always the Ground, which connects to the cable's shield. Pin 2 is for Data Negative (Data-), and Pin 3 is for Data Positive (Data+). Getting pins 2 and 3 swapped is a very common mistake that will prevent the signal from working at all. Always double-check your connections before you plug anything in.

You need a simple adapter that goes from a 5-pin connector to a 3-pin connector.
