At its core, a 2835 SMD LED strip light uses a specific size of chip: 2.8mm by 3.5mm. It's the successor to the old 3528, but it's much more efficient and can produce a lot more light without getting as hot. That's why we use it for high-performance architectural and task lighting — it delivers serious brightness while being very reliable.

A 24V LED strip is almost always the better choice for any run over about 16 feet (5m). Because it runs at a higher voltage, it draws half the current (amps) for the same brightness. Less current means less voltage drop and less heat buildup. This lets you do longer single runs before you see dimming at the end. The 2835 chip is efficient, but high-density strips still generate heat. Without a channel to pull that heat away, the LEDs will degrade much faster and fail early. For our higher-output strips, it's not optional — it's required for the warranty. We have hundreds of aluminum channels for LED strips to choose from.

For runs of 50 ft or more, the best LED lights are our 48V constant current strips. Standard 24V strips would require multiple power feeds to cover that distance without dimming. Our 48V system, like the FSL-48V-2835CC series, can go up to 164 feet (50 meters) on a single run with perfectly even brightness from start to finish. It completely solves the voltage drop problem for large architectural projects.

It varies by the strip's voltage and density. A typical 24V strip might have cut marks every 6 LEDs, which is about every 2 inches (50mm). However, we have specific models designed for precision work, like our 'single LED cuttable' strips. These have a tiny IC for each LED, allowing you to cut them after every single diode, sometimes as close as every 1/3 inch. That's perfect for exact fits in retail displays or custom joinery.

They are different tools for different jobs. The 2835 is the workhorse for high-efficiency white light. The 5050 chip is larger and often contains three smaller diodes, which is why it was the classic choice for RGB color-changing strips. COB (Chip on Board) is a totally different tech where hundreds of tiny, bare diodes are mounted directly to the PCB to create one continuous, dot-free line of light. You can, but you have to plan it right. To replace four typical 800-lumen can lights (3200 lumens total), you'd need about 30-40 feet of a high-output 2835 strip that produces around 800 lm/ft. The bigger difference is how the light is delivered. A strip in a cove or channel provides broad, indirect, diffuse light, while can lights create focused pools of direct light. For general ambiance, strips are great; for task-heavy areas like a kitchen island, you might still want the focused punch of a downlight.

To find the best LED strip lights for your job, focus on four specs in this order. First, brightness (lumens/ft) for your application. Second, voltage (12V, 24V, 48V) based on your run length. Third, Color Rendering Index (CRI) — always get 90+ for residential or retail spaces where color accuracy matters. Finally, density (LEDs/m) and IP rating for the visual look and environment. Get those four right, and you're golden.
