How to Ensure a Reliable Solderless Connection

A failing solderless connector is almost always due to improper installation, not a faulty part. Follow these steps for a solid connection every time, whether you're using a three pin LED connector for COB or SMD strips.

  • Cut Perfectly: Your cut must be straight and directly in the center of the copper solder pads. An angled cut or cutting between the pads is the number one cause of connection failure. Use sharp scissors.

  • Match PCB Width: A 10mm wide CCT strip needs a 10mm connector. An 8mm strip needs an 8mm connector. Trying to use the wrong size will result in poor contact and flickering channels.

  • Seat and Secure: Push the strip all the way into the connector until it hits the internal stop. Make sure the copper pads are aligned under the metal prongs. For piercing-style connectors, use a pair of pliers to firmly and evenly close the housing. You should feel a distinct 'click' as the contacts bite into the circuit board.

Frequently Asked Questions About 3-Pin CCT LED Strip Parts

Got a question about connecting your tunable white or addressable LED strips? I've answered thousands of them over the years. Here are the most common ones that come up.

Physically, there's often no difference—a 3-pin color temperature led connector is the same piece of plastic and metal as one for addressable strips like WS2812B. The key is the wiring pinout. For CCT, the pins are typically V+, Warm White, and Cool White. For addressable strips, they're V+, Data, and Ground. You can use the same connector for either, but you have to wire it to the correct pads on the strip. Get that wrong and it just won't work.

You have to match the connector to the PCB width of your LED strip, which is usually 8mm, 10mm, or 12mm. Using a 10mm connector on an 8mm strip will result in a loose, unreliable connection that will likely fail. It's printed on the strip itself or in the specs. Don't guess. 

For a sharp, professional corner, use an L-shaped or corner connector. Bending the strip itself on a hard 90-degree angle will damage the circuit and cause LEDs to fail. With a 90-degree L connector, you just cut the strip, and connect each end to the L-shape piece. It's fast, requires no soldering, and ensures a solid connection right in the corner.

Nine times out of ten, one of the pins inside the 3-pin CCT LED strip connector isn't making good contact with the copper pad on the strip. Open the connector and check that the strip is pushed in straight and all the way. Also, make sure the wire order on your extension matches the strip's pads. If V+ is in the middle on the strip, it needs to be in the middle on the connector's wire, too.

The longer the extension, the thicker the wire needs to be to avoid voltage drop, which makes your lights dim. For a short jump of a few feet, 22AWG is usually fine. For extensions of 10 feet or more, you should step up to 20AWG or even 18AWG, especially on a 12V system. We stock various gauges of LED light extension cable specifically for this.
