Product Information
This bulk pack of 100 high-power 1W infrared emitting diodes provides a robust solution for professional and DIY projects requiring strong, focused 850nm IR illumination. Each 5mm through-hole LED is engineered for reliability, delivering a potent radiant flux for applications in security, surveillance, and machine vision. Unlike standard lighting solutions such as 3528 SMD flexible LED strips, these components emit light in the infrared spectrum, invisible to the human eye but highly effective for night vision cameras and sensors. With a low forward voltage of 1.2-1.6V and a flexible operating current of 150-350mA, these emitters are versatile for custom PCB designs. This product is part of our extensive selection of IR LED emitters and diodes, offering excellent value and consistent performance for volume production or large-scale deployments.

Application Scenarios
How to Handle & Solder These IR Emitters
- Identify Polarity: Before soldering, correctly identify the anode (positive, longer lead) and the cathode (negative, shorter lead). The cathode side also corresponds to the flat edge on the lens base.
- Implement Current Limiting: NEVER connect the diode directly to a voltage source. Use a constant current driver set to 150-350mA or a series resistor calculated for your specific supply voltage.
- Solder Carefully: Solder leads quickly to prevent heat damage to the internal die. A typical guideline is under 5 seconds at 260°C (500°F). Avoid applying mechanical stress to the leads while hot.
- Consider Heatsinking: For continuous operation at the maximum 1W power rating, proper thermal management is crucial. Ensure your PCB has adequate copper area or an external heatsink to dissipate heat.
- Test Your Circuit: Power the circuit briefly to ensure the emitter is functioning correctly before final assembly. Use a night-vision-enabled camera to see the IR output.
- Observe Safety: Infrared light is invisible to the naked eye. Avoid staring directly into an active emitter at close range to prevent potential eye damage.
- Always use current limiting. Failure to do so will destroy the LED instantly.
- Observe proper ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) precautions when handling the components.
- The 850nm wavelength produces a faint, visible red glow directly from the emitter die; this is normal and indicates operation.
- For powering large arrays, a common approach is to use a higher voltage source like a DC12V power adapter with a suitable constant current driver or DC-DC buck converter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between 850nm and 940nm IR LEDs?
A:850nm LEDs produce a faint red glow from the emitter, which can be a deterrent in covert security, but cameras are generally more sensitive to this wavelength. 940nm LEDs are completely invisible to the human eye, offering total stealth. For applications requiring total invisibility, we also offer components and 940nm infrared LED strips.
Q: Do I need a resistor with this LED?
A:Yes, absolutely. You must use either a series resistor to limit current or, for better performance, a dedicated constant current driver. Connecting the LED directly to a voltage source will destroy it.
Q: How do I calculate the correct resistor value?
A:Use Ohm's Law: R = (V_supply - V_forward) / I_forward. For example, with a 5V supply and a target current of 300mA (0.3A), and using a forward voltage of 1.5V: R = (5V - 1.5V) / 0.3A = 11.67Ω. Use the next standard higher value, like 12Ω.
Q: Is the light from this 850nm LED visible?
A:The infrared light beam itself is invisible to the human eye. However, you will see a faint red glow directly on the LED's chip when it is powered on. This is a characteristic of the 850nm wavelength.
Q: How can I tell the polarity (anode/cathode)?
A:The anode (positive) has the longer lead. The cathode (negative) has the shorter lead and is also indicated by a flat spot on the side of the 5mm plastic lens.
Q: Can I power multiple LEDs from one power supply?
A:Yes. You can wire them in series with a constant current driver, which is the most efficient method. You can also wire them in parallel, but each parallel string must have its own current-limiting resistor to prevent thermal runaway.
Q: Is a ready-made strip version available?
A:Yes, for projects that require covering a larger area without designing a custom PCB, we offer pre-assembled solutions. You can find them in our 850nm near-infrared LED strips category.
