940nm vs 850nm Infrared Lights for Night Vision

Humans can't see infrared light 940nm but we can see a little pink light at 850nm infrared light. Both 940nm and 850nm IR light can be used in night vision systems. The difference is that 940nm infrared led light is completely invisible to the naked eye and almost no glow under cell phone cameras, therefore 940nm led strip is better suited for surveillance scenarios where concealment is required. (Some iPhone cameras don't see the IR led strip 940nm infrared light, some Android phones can see a little bit of a light pink spot in the 940nm infrared LED.)

Got a question about our 940nm IR strips? I've probably answered it a thousand times. Here are the most common ones that come up before a purchase.

Infrared light is just light with a wavelength too long for the human eye to detect. Think of it like a sound pitched too high for you to hear. Our eyes are tuned for a specific range, roughly 400nm (violet) to 700nm (red). This 940nm infrared lights LED strip operates far beyond that red, so it's completely invisible to you. Your camera sensor, however, can see it just fine.

That's the trick question—it has no color. 'Color' is just how our brains interpret different wavelengths of *visible* light. Since a 940nm infrared lights LED strip emits light we can't see, it doesn't have a color. Some people see a very, very faint pinkish glow from an 850nm strip if they look directly at the emitter, but a true 940nm IR LED is completely dark to our eyes.

The main reason for choosing a 940nm IR LED strip is for total stealth. An 850nm strip gives off a faint but visible red glow, which can give away the position of a security camera. The light from a 940nm strip is completely invisible, making it ideal for covert surveillance where you can't have any visible signature. The tradeoff is that most cameras are slightly less sensitive to 940nm, so you might need a bit more power for the same illumination range.

Almost all modern security cameras will, but it's smart to check. Look for a feature called an 'IR cut filter' or 'Day/Night mode' in your camera's specs. This means the camera can switch to see infrared light when it gets dark. If your camera has built-in IR LEDs already, it's virtually certain to work with an external 940nm IR LED strip. You're just giving it a lot more invisible light to work with.

This is a super common question. Since you can't see the light, you need a camera that can. The easiest way is to just point your smartphone camera at the LED IR 940nm strip. Most phone cameras (especially on Android, some iPhones have stronger IR filters) will show the individual LEDs glowing with a purplish-pink light on your screen. If you see that, it's working perfectly.

You calculate it just like any other LED strip: check the wattage per meter and multiply by the length. For example, a 72W, 5-meter roll draws 14.4W per meter. For the full 5 meters, you'd need 72W. Always add a 20% buffer, so get a power supply rated for at least 86W. A 24V 100W power supply from our MeanWell indoor power supply lineup would be a solid choice.

Probably not. The #1 'problem' is that a 940nm IR LED strip is designed to be invisible. Before you assume it's faulty, grab your phone and view the strip through the camera app. You should see the LEDs glowing on the screen. If you still see nothing, double-check your polarity (+ to +, - to -) and make sure your power supply is outputting the correct voltage. Yes, they generate heat, and yes, you should plan for it. Light is energy, and any energy transfer creates heat as a byproduct, even if the light is invisible. For higher-density strips, especially anything over 10W per meter, mounting them in one of our aluminum channels is non-negotiable. The channel acts as a heat sink, pulls heat away from the LEDs, and ensures they last their full 50,000-hour rated lifespan. Without it, they can overheat and fail early.

Range depends entirely on the LED density of the strip and the sensitivity of your camera. A standard density strip (60 LEDs/meter) might give you a good flood of light out to 15-20 feet. A high-density or double-row strip could easily push that to 40-50 feet or more. For long-throw applications, you'll want the most powerful strip you can get, like our double row LED night vision bar. It's always a balance between power and camera sensitivity.

While the 940 nm red light is invisible, the LEDs still emit powerful non-ionizing radiation. You should never stare directly into any high-power LED source, visible or not, at close range for an extended period. The energy can still affect your eye tissues even if you don't 'see' it as light. Under normal use as an area illuminator, it's perfectly safe and poses no risk. Just don't treat it like a toy to stare into.

Our 940nm infrared LED strips are rated for 50,000 hours of operation, just like our visible light strips. The key to getting that lifespan is proper heat management. If you mount the strip on a surface that can't dissipate heat well (like wood or plastic), or if you run it coiled up, its life will be much shorter. Mount it on metal, preferably an aluminum channel, and you'll get years and years of reliable service.
