However, many common strips like those using the WS2811 IC control small groups or segments of LEDs. For most animation effects, segment control is perfectly fine and more cost-effective. If your project absolutely requires single-pixel precision, make sure you're buying a strip with an IC that supports it, like the WS2812.
That's a classic case of voltage drop, and it's not a faulty strip. On longer runs, the voltage supplied at the beginning literally runs out of steam by the time it reaches the end, causing the LEDs furthest from the power supply to look dim or shift in color. This is especially common on 5V strips. The solution is to use a 24V pixel cob led strip for runs over 5 meters or to inject power at the far end (or in the middle) of your run. It's a simple fix that solves the problem 99% of the time.
The main difference between a 5V, 12V, or 24V pixel cob led strip is the trade-off between control precision and maximum run length. 5V strips often have a higher density of control segments, sometimes down to a single LED, but suffer from voltage drop much sooner. 24V strips are the workhorse for architectural jobs because you can run much longer lengths—often up to 10 meters—before needing to inject more power. 12V sits in the middle. For most projects like coving or long under-cabinet runs, 24V is the way to go.
No, and this is a common mistake that can not light up your smart strip. A standard RGB controller just sends out constant power on three channels. An addressable COB LED strip needs a special 'smart' or 'pixel' controller that sends a digital data signal to the ICs on the strip. Make sure your controller explicitly says it supports the right IC protocol (like WS2811, WS2812, etc.) and color, voltage.
Not necessarily. The number of controllable segments on an addressable COB strip is determined by the number and type of ICs, not the density of the LEDs themselves. You could have a very high-density chip on board strip with 720 LEDs/m but only 20 control segments per meter, meaning each IC controls a group of 36 LEDs. Always check the product specs for the 'pixels/m' or 'segments/m' number—that tells you the true resolution of control you'll get.
Yes, an addressable COB strip can be controlled via an app, but the feature comes from the controller, not the strip itself. You'll need to pair the strip with a WiFi or Bluetooth-enabled addressable controller. Absolutely. Getting full RGBWIC color mixing and animations outdoors is a common request. You'll want an addressable COB strip with an IP67 or IP68 rating. IP67 strips are housed in a protective silicone tube, great for patios and decks where it might get rained on. For full underwater use in a pool or fountain, you need an IP68-rated strip. If only the first LED or segment is misbehaving, it's almost always a data signal problem right at the start of the line. First, check your wiring: make sure the Data line from your controller is connected to the Data In (signal start) on the strip, and not by mistake to the Data Out. Second, a poor solder joint or a loose connector on that data pin will corrupt the signal before it even gets started. A quick reflow of the solder on that first connection usually fixes it.

For a typical 5-meter roll of RGBIC COB strip rated at, say, 15W/m, the total wattage is 5m * 15W/m = 75 watts. To find the amps, divide the total watts by the voltage. For a 24V strip, that's 75W / 24V = 3.13 amps. It's standard practice to add a 20% safety headroom, so you'd want a 24V power supply rated for at least 3.75A.
