They're very similar, but the GS8208 IC has a couple of key advantages. It has built-in display patterns, so if it loses the data signal from your controller, it can run a default rainbow effect instead of just going dark. It also has built-in power-on and power-off protection to improve its lifespan. Both are 12V and have a backup data line, but the GS8208 is often a more robust choice for installations where reliability is critical.
The GS8208 protocol is a standard single-wire signal, very much like the one used by WS281x series chips. Yes, GS8208 RGBIC strips work great with most common controllers, including WLED, FastLED on an Arduino, or ESPHome. You'll just select a WS281x profile in your software, and it should control the strip perfectly. We carry a wide range of compatible addressable controllers if you need one.
For a standard 5m long run of a GS8208 12V strip, you can usually power it from one end without seeing voltage drop. The 12V platform is much better for this than 5V strips. If you're connecting two 5m reels together for a 10m run, you absolutely must inject power at the start and at the end to keep the color and brightness consistent. Yes, but you have to order the correct IP rating. For outdoor use where it might get splashed, like under a patio roof, you need at least an IP65 rating (silicone-coated). For areas where it might be submerged or hit with pressure washers, you need IP67 (in a silicone tube) or IP68 (fully potted). Using an indoor IP20 strip outside will lead to corrosion and failure in a matter of months.
While both are 12V breakpoint-resume ICs, their data signal timing can have slight differences. In most cases, a controller setting that works for one will work for the other. However, for high-speed effects or very long data runs, you might see glitches if you're using the wrong controller profile. It's always best practice to use a controller that specifically lists support for your strip's IC, or at least one from the same family.
