When is an Ultra-Slim COB Strip the right choice?

Standard COB LED strips are typically 8mm or 10mm wide. When you need to hide a light source in a space that offers millimeters of clearance, you need an ultra-slim or skinny light strip. That's where this category comes in. These Cob PCBs (the flexible circuit board) as narrow as 2mm, 2.7mm, 3mm, or 4mm — thin enough to slip into the tightest grooves in custom joinery, model-making projects, or intricate sign lettering where a standard light strip just won't fit.

A note on power and handling

Because these Cob light strips are so small, they require a bit more care. The adhesive backing has less surface area, so make sure your mounting surface is perfectly clean and dry. The solder pads are also tiny, so a fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand are a must. And there is no quick cob connector for extra-slim 2mm/3mm/4mm models. Finally, due to the thinner copper traces, 5V cob small models are best for shorter runs (under 2 meters) to avoid voltage drop. For longer installations, choose a 12V or 24V version and plan your power connections accordingly.

It's always a good idea. While these skinny COB LED strips run cooler than their high-power SMD cousins, a channel acts as a heat sink, which is key for a long life. Even a small mini aluminum profile will pull heat away and prevent the strip from dying early. For anything over 2 watts per foot, I wouldn't install it without one. It also gives you a much straighter, more professional-looking line of light.

That's classic voltage drop, and it's the number one issue with any long run of low-voltage LED tape light. The longer the strip, the more resistance the copper traces have, and the voltage literally drops by the time it reaches the last LEDs. For a 12V thin COB LED strip, you'll start to see it after about 5 meters (16.4 ft). With 24V, you can get closer to 10 meters. The fix is to run parallel wires from the power supply to the next section (called power injection) or start your run from the center and go out in two directions.

On a 5V system, you have to be conservative with your run length. For a 5mm COB strip, I wouldn't plan for more than 3 meters (about 10 feet) from a single power feed before voltage drop becomes noticeable. 5V is great for small projects, models, or when you need to power it from a USB source, but for longer runs in coves or under cabinets, you'll have a much easier time with 12V or 24V versions. Honestly, no. Once you get this small, there just isn't enough physical space on the PCB for a reliable solderless connector to grab onto. For any of our COB strips under 5mm wide, you'll need to solder your connection wires directly to the copper pads. It requires a fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand, but it's the only way to get a solid, lasting connection.

Only if you buy a model specifically listed as 'Cut-Anywhere' or 'Arbitrary Trimming'. Our 6mm Cut-Anywhere COB strip is a great example. Standard COB strips have designated cut lines, usually marked with a little scissor icon. For these ultra slim models, those cut points can be very close together—sometimes every 10mm—but you still have to cut on that line. Cutting a standard strip in the middle of a segment will kill that section.

The narrowest addressable COB LED strip we stock is an incredible 2.7mm wide. It uses tiny 1010 LEDs to pack full RGBIC control into a profile that can fit almost anywhere. For standard, non-addressable RGB, we have a 5mm wide version that's extremely popular for tight accent lighting in display cases and vehicle interiors. 

You dim the power supply, not the strip itself. The ultra slim COB LED tape light runs on low-voltage DC power, so you can't just hook it up to a 120V AC wall dimmer. You need a dimmable LED driver that's compatible with your wall control (usually TRIAC/ELV for Lutron/Leviton) or you can use a low-voltage PWM dimmer that sits between a standard power supply and the strip. We stock a wide range of single color PWM dimmers that work perfectly for this.

It's strong, but you have to give it a perfect surface. Because the tape is so tiny, there's very little surface area for the 3M adhesive to grip. It absolutely must be mounted on a clean, dry, and smooth surface. Wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol first—don't use household cleaners that can leave a film. If you're mounting on rough wood or a porous surface, the adhesive will fail. In those cases, use a channel or a tiny bead of clear silicone.

Patience, a good iron, and flux. First, use a fine-point tip on your soldering iron, set to about 350°C (660°F). Second, 'tin' both the pads on the micro COB light strip and the wire ends first by applying a tiny bit of solder to each. Third, use a flux pen on the pads—this makes the solder flow exactly where you want it. Then, just bring the tinned wire to the tinned pad and touch it with the iron for a second. It should make a clean joint instantly without overheating the board.

Yes, we have waterproof options for these mini COB LED strips. They typically come inside a slim silicone tube or with a silicone coating on top to achieve an IP65 or IP67 rating. This makes them great for bathroom vanities, kitchen toe-kicks, or even some outdoor applications where they're protected from direct submersion. Just be aware the waterproofing adds a little bit to the overall width and height, so double-check the dimensions.

This usually comes down to manufacturing batches, or what we call 'binning'. Even for the same CCT rating, like 3000K, there can be tiny variations in the phosphor coating on the LEDs from one production run to the next. We have extremely tight quality control, but if you're mixing a strip you bought today with one from two years ago, you might see a slight difference. For any job where color consistency is critical, always order the full amount you need at one time.
