What is WS2813 LED strip?

WS2813 is the upgraded version of WS2812B. Like WS2812B, the WS2813 is packaged in an SMD5050 RGB/RGBW LED and is driven by 5VDC. Single LEDs can be cut and each LED is individually addressable. We offer 30, 60, 96, and 144 LED densities for WS2813 LED strip lights.

In terms of communication, WS2813 is upgraded to dual signal transmission, and the transmission continues at the signal breakpoint. When a single pixel LED is damaged, it does not affect the overall color display, unless two consecutive LEDs are damaged. More reliable use and less subsequent maintenance trouble.

WS2813 has a better color display and higher transmission rate (2000Hz) than WS2812B, without flicker in the camera shooting.

WS2813 has a reset time of 250μs (WS2812B - 280μs), allowing LEDs to work better at lower frequencies and in cheaper microcontrollers.

WS2813 LED strip can work simultaneously with WS2812B LED strip (note the pins) and is compatible with Arduino, Raspberry PI development boards, and dream color addressable LED controllers to achieve beautiful colors.

Frequently Asked Questions About WS2813 LED Strips

Got a question about wiring, power, or controllers for your WS2813 project? I've answered thousands of them over the years. Here are the most common ones.

The big one is the backup data line. On a WS2813 LED strip, if one LED chip fails, the signal hops over it to the next one, so the rest of the strip keeps working. On a WS2812B, one dead chip takes down everything after it. The WS2813 also has a higher refresh frequency, which means less flicker on camera, and a slightly faster response time. It's just a more robust design for any serious install.

It's about where the 'brain' is. In a WS2813 strip, the controller IC is built right into every single 5050 LED package. That's why you can cut it after any LED. A WS2811 strip uses an external IC that controls a group of LEDs, usually three. So your control resolution is lower, and your cut points are farther apart. For fine-grained effects, WS2813 is the way to go.

You need a good quality, regulated DC 5V power supply. Never, ever use anything else. A 12V supply will instantly destroy the chips. To calculate the size, multiply the strip length in meters by the watts per meter listed on the product page, then add about 20% headroom. For a 5m strip at 18W/m, that's (5 * 18) * 1.2 = 108W. So you'd want at least a 120W 5V UL-listed power supply.

It depends on the color you need. Both are great 5V digital IC strips with a backup data line. The main difference is that SK6812 is most commonly found in RGBW versions, which have a dedicated white LED chip for a pure, high-quality white light. Many WS2813 strips are standard RGB. If you need beautiful pastels or a clean warm white, an SK6812 RGBW strip is probably the better choice. If you just need saturated colors, a WS2813 RGB is a solid, reliable option.

Yes, perfectly. The WS2813 uses the same timing protocol as the WS2812B, which is one of the most widely supported chips out there. In WLED, you'd just select 'WS2812x' as your strip type. For Arduino, the popular FastLED and NeoPixel libraries work with it out of the box. Just remember to connect both the data (DI) and backup (BI) lines from the strip to the same data pin on your controller.

They're very similar but not identical. When you're comparing WS2813 vs WS2818, the main difference is that WS2818 is a 12V strip, which helps reduce voltage drop on longer runs. CS2803 is another 5V strip that's a direct competitor to WS2813, also featuring a backup data line. They all share the same goal: preventing one failed LED from killing the whole strip. For most 5V projects, WS2813 and CS2803 are both good.

This is almost always a bad connection at the cut point. The copper pads are small, so it's easy to get a cold solder joint or for a solderless connector not to bite through the waterproofing properly. Re-check your connection. Also, make sure you're sending data in the right direction. There are little arrows printed on the strip showing the direction of data flow.
