WS2814 vs. WS2811, WS2813, and WS2815
The most basic and popular type of WS2811 is the RGB LED, while the WS2814 RGBW LED offers greater color richness. You can freely program red, green, blue, and white (with color temperatures selectable from 2300-2500K, 3000K, 4000K, 6000K) at each WS2814 IC location.
WS2814 operates at higher voltages—12V and 24V—than WS2813, which typically runs only at 5V. Therefore, WS2814 is better suited for commercial lighting projects, while WS2813 is ideal for DIY projects.
Both the WS2814 and WS2815 are available in RGBW strip variants and support dual-signal transmission. The main difference lies in the IC protocol and controller compatibility. Most plug-and-play smart addressable LED controllers are fully compatible with the WS2815 protocol, but some do not support the WS2814 protocol well.

For a 10-meter run, go with a 24V WS2814 RGBW LED strip every time. Higher voltage pushes current more efficiently over longer distances. With a 24V system, you can run roughly double the length of a 12V strip before voltage drop becomes a problem. This means less wiring, fewer power supplies, and a more stable installation. We stock 12V for specific projects, but 24V is the standard for a reason.
You need a pixel controller that specifically supports the WS2814 protocol. Unlike simple RGBW strips that use four constant voltage channels, each WS2814 LED needs digital instructions. Look for controllers that list WS2814, WS2811, or similar single-wire protocols in their specs. We have a whole range of standalone, DMX, and WiFi-enabled addressable controllers that are tested with these strips.
They're different tools for different jobs, not strictly better or worse. The main difference in the WS2814 vs SK6812 RGBW debate is that our WS2814 uses an external IC, while the SK6812 has the IC built into the LED package. This means with a WS2814, one IC often controls a small group of LEDs (say, 6 LEDs per pixel). SK6812 is usually one LED per pixel. For smooth, flowing gradients, SK6812 has higher resolution. For large-scale architectural work where you need high brightness and robust 24V operation, the WS2814 is often the more practical choice.
The cut points depend on how the strip is wired. On most of our 24V WS2814 LED strip lights, one IC controls a group of 6 LEDs, so you can typically cut it every 6 LEDs. The PCB will have a clear line marked between copper pads showing you exactly where to cut. For our 144 LED/m version, this works out to a cut point about every 4.2cm. Always check the product page for the exact cut length before you plan your installation.
Even at 144 LEDs/meter, you can see some spotting in very shallow channels with a clear cover. For a perfectly smooth, dot-free line of light, you have two options. You can use a deeper aluminum channel with a heavily frosted diffuser, or you can switch to one of our WS2814 COB strips. The COB versions have a continuous line, so they are 100% dot-free even with no diffuser at all.
The answer is one word: effects. A standard RGBW LED strip light can only show one color at a time across its entire length. A WS2814 addressable RGBW strip lets you control each pixel (or small group of LEDs) individually. This is how you create flowing rainbow effects, chasing lights, and other dynamic animations. If you just need static color or a simple white, standard strips are fine. If you want motion, you need an addressable strip.
