WS2815 is a smart digital IC chip that makes SMD LEDs individually addressable and programmable, built into 5050 RGB LED, 3535 RGB LED and 5050 White LED, enabling light strips composed of SMD5050 RGB or 3000K Warm White and 6000K Daylight White LEDs to display fantastic static and dynamic colors to meet different lighting requirements. In February 2025, we launched a new range of WS2815 led products - 12V WS2815 RGBW LED Strips, which offer excellent color consistency across a five-meter strip of 30, 60, 96, and 144 densities (per meter), providing another option for programmable projects that require 4-in-1 RGBW color.

WS2815 LED Applications

12V WS2815 LED strip is an upgraded version of the single data signal 5V WS2812B and 5V/12V SK6812, which adopts a dual data transmission method, and the spare/backup data line ensures the stability of signal transmission, similar to 12V GS8208 and CS8812 (WS2815 vs CS8812). Using dual-signal addressable light strips for commercial lighting, the engineering version WS2815 and GS8208 led strips are the first choice. Their special PCB design makes the tape light strip performance more stable and outstanding.

WS2815 vs. WS2805

The most notable feature of the WS2815 is that its built-in IC allows each LED to be programmed independently as a single pixel.

The WS2805 is an external RGBCCT IC chip with five color channels; a single WS2805 IC controls 3 or 6 LEDs on a light strip, and the LEDs are not individually addressable.

WS2815 vs. WS2813 vs. WS2818

WS2818 is also an external IC to drive LEDs in multi-diode groups. The individual pixel addressability of WS2815 makes it superior to WS2818 for high-resolution graphics, smooth dynamic animations, and tight architectural accents where fine pixel density is required.

Compared to the 5V WS2813, the 12V high-voltage WS2815 excels in continuous long-run performance. Operating at 12V drastically reduces current draw and voltage drop across extended strip runs, allowing you to power longer continuous lengths (up to 5 meters) from a single end without experiencing color shift, fading, or the need for frequent power injection—making it a far more efficient choice for large-scale commercial installations.

Frequently Asked Questions About WS2815 LED Strips

Got questions about our 12V WS2815 addressable strips? I've been answering them for 12 years. Here are the most common things people ask right before they buy.

The biggest differences are voltage and data redundancy. Our WS2815 IC programmable LED strips run on 12V, which means less voltage drop over distance compared to the 5V WS2812B. They also have a backup data line, so if one LED's chip fails, the signal bypasses it and the rest of the strip stays lit. On a WS2812B, one dead chip takes down everything after it.

With these 12V WS2815 LED ribbon lights, you'll get a solid 5 meters (16.4ft) with power fed from just one end. If you need a longer continuous run, you just inject power at the other end or in the middle. You don't *have* to, but you absolutely should. The whole point of the WS2815 design is that backup line. If you leave the BI pin disconnected, it'll work just like a single-data strip. But by connecting it, you get the insurance that one failed pixel won't kill the rest of your installation. It's a simple connection that saves a massive headache down the road.

It depends entirely on your goal. For pure decorative color effects, addressable RGB is great. If you need a good quality, actual white light in addition to colors, get an RGBW LED strip lights. The dedicated white chip makes a huge difference. For applications where you only need to adjust the warmth of white light, from warm to cool, our addressable tunable white CCT strips are the perfect fit.

Yes, WS2815 strips work great with DIY platforms like Arduino (using libraries like FastLED or NeoPixel) and WLED. You just need to select WS2812 or a similar single-wire protocol in the software, as the controller only sends data on the main data line. For non-DIY projects, we stock a huge range of dedicated addressable LED controllers that work out of the box, from simple remotes to advanced DMX systems.

For outdoor locations, you need a strip with a proper waterproof rating. Look for IP65 for areas that might get splashed but aren't submerged, or IP67 which comes in a protective silicone tube for more exposed spots. Our DC12V waterproof power supplies and sealed connectors are designed to complete the system safely. Just note that the waterproof coating can slightly shift the color temperature of white LEDs, which we list on the product page.

We do this all day. A huge amount of the WS2815 12v led ribbon we ship is built to customer drawings. Just send us your lengths, even a sketch on a napkin with measurements is fine. We'll figure out the cut points, solder on the lead wires or connectors you need, and add any waterproofing. An engineer will send back a clear parts list and a price, usually the same business day, with no fee or obligation to order. It's how we make sure complex jobs actually work.

This is a data signal problem, not a faulty strip. First, check your controller software and make sure you've selected the correct color order (usually GRB for these, not RGB). If that's correct, the issue is likely a data line that's too long or running near noisy AC power lines. Keep the wire from the controller to the strip as short as possible, and use a twisted pair of wires for Data and Ground if it's more than a few feet.

Our engineering versions are built for more demanding commercial projects where stability is paramount. They typically feature a thicker copper PCB for better heat dissipation and less voltage drop. We also add extra capacitors right on the strip, often one for every few LEDs. This helps smooth out the power, leading to more stable performance and color consistency in long-term, high-usage installations. For home or hobbyist use, the regular version is perfectly fine.

Each 12v led diode, or more accurately each 5050 LED package, has a tiny WS2815 integrated circuit (IC) built right into it. This microchip is the 'brain' for that specific LED. It listens for a digital signal coming down the data wire, picks out the specific color and brightness instruction intended just for it (its 'address'), and then sets its own red, green, and blue emitters to match. It then passes the rest of the data stream down the line to the next chip. It's a clever, all-in-one solution.
