The COB RGB LED chips are coated with a frosted white light-diffusing silicone layer to prevent noticeable hotspots or dark spots on the light strip. Spot-free COB RGB lighting is highly dependent on the density of the LED chips integrated into the light strip; the lower-density 450-LED version may exhibit hotspots, while the higher-density 840- and 1080-LED versions provide very uniform lighting. Got a question before you order? I've probably answered it a thousand times. Here are the most common ones I get on the tech desk.

The main difference with an RGB COB LED strip is the perfectly smooth, dot-free line of light it produces. We mount tiny red, green, and blue LED chips directly on the board and cover them in a continuous layer of diffuser cover. An SMD RGB strip has larger, individual LED packages soldered on, so you see distinct dots of light, especially in reflections or tight spaces. COB gives you that clean, high-end neon look without needing a deep, milky channel to diffuse it.

No, and this is a critical difference. A standard RGB COB LED strip shows one solid color along its entire length at any given time. You can change that color, but the whole strip is always the same. An RGBIC (or 'addressable') COB strip has an Independent Chip, which means you can control small segments individually to create chasing rainbow effects, moving patterns, and other animations. If you need the whole strip to be one uniform color, choose standard RGB. For dynamic effects, you need addressable.

That's classic voltage drop. Over a 5m (16.4ft) run, the voltage from the power supply decreases, causing the LEDs at the far end to get less power. On an RGB strip, the RGB white light is extra noticeable. Using a long-run COB strip helps, as does powering the strip from both ends for longer runs.

Yes, you need connectors specifically made for the PCB width and pin layout of your COB RGB strip. We stock a whole range of solderless 4-pin RGB connectors for different widths, from strip-to-strip joiners to strip-to-wire leads for connecting back to your controller.

Once you cut an RGB COB LED strip light along one of the marked cut lines, you have two options. The best, most reliable way is to solder 4-conductor wire to the copper pads on the new end. If you're not comfortable soldering, you can use a solderless clip-on connector. Just make sure the connector matches the strip's width (we have them in 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, etc.) and that the four contacts on the strip slide in and line up perfectly under the connector's metal pins before you clamp it shut.

This happens when the green and blue channels aren't making a solid connection, either at the controller or with a solderless connector. Check your wiring. Make sure the 'G' and 'B' wires are securely in their terminals and that the pins on your connector are firmly piercing the correct copper pads on the cob rgb strip light.

A side glow RGB COB LED strip (sometimes called side-emitting) has the LEDs mounted to emit light parallel to the mounting surface, not perpendicular like a standard strip. Instead of shining up at the ceiling, it shines sideways. This is incredibly useful for creating accent lines, outlining shapes, or backlighting signs where you need the light source to be hidden in a very thin edge. They're a great alternative to our standard side-emitting SMD strips when you need a completely dotless look.

For any color changing RGB COB strip, you need an RGB controller that sits between your power supply and the strip itself. The power supply provides the 12V or 24V, and the controller handles the color mixing and dimming by sending signals down the three color channels (Red, Green, Blue).
