high bright led strip lights

The 5050 SMD flexible LED strip light is the original workhorse of the lighting world. SMD 5050 LED tape remains a top seller for one simple reason: its 5.0mm x 5.0mm package easily houses three separate diodes, providing a large, bright light source that’s powerful enough for task lighting but adaptable enough for subtle accents.

That same robust design makes it an excellent choice for powerful single-color, tunable white, and even specialty lighting like Ultraviolet (UV) and Infrared (IR) strips

Here you’ll find densities from a subtle 30 LEDs/meter all the way up to ultra-bright 360 LEDs/meter triple-row 5050SMD strips, available in 12V, 24V, and even long-run 110V/220V versions.

What Are 5050 LED and 5050 LED Strip Lights?

5050 LED strip lights use 5.0mm × 5.0mm surface-mounted LEDs (SMD 5050 chips) mounted on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB). The name 5050 refers to the chip size. Compared with smaller LED packages like 2835 and 3528, 5050 chip and 5054 chip feature a larger light-emitting surface, allowing higher brightness and stronger visual impact.

Because of their balanced output, reliability, and color versatility, 5050 LED strips remain one of the most popular choices for decorative, accent, and functional lighting projects. Choose SuperLightingLED 5050 strips when you need bright output, flexible installation, and proven reliability.

5050 vs 3528 / 2835 LED Strips

Compared with 3528 or 2835 LED strips, 5050 LEDs generally provide:

  • Higher lumen output per LED package

  • Larger emitting surface for brighter appearance

  • Better suitability for RGB and RGBW designs

  • Stronger accent lighting performance

This makes 5050 LED strips ideal for applications requiring more brightness or richer color effects.

Frequently Asked Questions About 5050 SMD LED Strip Lights

Your project questions, answered by our engineers. Here’s what people ask us most about 5050 LED tape before they buy.

An SMD 5050 LED light uses a chip that's 5.0mm by 5.0mm square. That larger surface lets it produce more light than smaller chips like the 3528. It's the workhorse of the industry because it hits the sweet spot: bright enough for task lighting, reliable, and it's the classic chip used for RGB and RGBW color-changing strips. We've used them in projects since 2011 and they just keep working.

That's classic voltage drop. It happens on every low-voltage DC strip. For a 12V 5050 LED tape, the voltage literally runs out of steam after about 16.4ft (5m), causing the LEDs at the far end to look dim or shift color. For longer runs, you either need to inject power at both ends or, better yet, use a 24V strip from the start. Our guide to long LED runs explains exactly how to wire it right.

Yes, absolutely. A 24V system carries current more efficiently than a 12V one, which means it can power a much longer run of 5050 LED strip lights before voltage drop becomes an issue. You can typically run up to 32.8ft (10m) on a single power feed with 24V, double the length of 12V. For any installation over 16ft, we always recommend starting with 24V.

If your RGB 5050 LED strip lights show the wrong colors—like you press red and get green—it's almost always a wiring or controller issue, not a faulty strip. The most common cause is the R, G, and B wires are mismatched between the strip and the controller output. Just swap the wires around until the colors match the remote. If that doesn't work, the controller itself might be set to the wrong chip type, so check its manual.

This is where CCT tunable and RGB strips shine. With an RGB 5050 LED strip, you can mix red, green, and blue to create millions of shades—think lavender, teal, or orange for a party. For more subtle, high-quality light, our dual white CCT dimmable strips let you blend warm white and cool white to get any shade in between. You can perfectly match the morning sun (around 6000K) or a warm sunset (2700K) with the same strip.

Yes, proper heat management is critical. While a standard 60 LED/m strip doesn't need much more than the copper on its own circuit board, our high-density 5050 SMD LED strips with 120 or 240 LEDs/m definitely do. Mounting them inside an aluminum channel is non-negotiable. The channel acts as a heatsink, pulling heat away from the chips. Without it, the LEDs will overheat, their lifespan will drop, and the color can shift.

This is all about the math: Volts x Amps = Watts. First, find the watts per foot (or meter) on the strip's spec sheet. Multiply that by the total length of strip you're running. That gives you your total wattage load. Now, choose a power supply with a wattage rating at least 20% higher than your total load. Running a power supply at 100% capacity is the #1 cause of premature failure we see on jobsites. We stock hundreds of UL-listed 24V power supplies to match any load.

SMD simply stands for Surface-Mounted Device. It's a method of manufacturing where the LED chip is soldered directly onto the surface of the printed circuit board (the flexible strip). This is different from older 'through-hole' LEDs that had wire leads going through the board. Almost all modern LED tape is SMD because it’s a much more compact, efficient, and automatable way to build the product.

Yes, we have high-voltage 5050 strips that run directly on 110V or 220V AC, no bulky DC driver needed. They're great for very long runs—up to 164ft (50m) on a single plug. These are almost always IP65 or higher because the high voltage requires a thick, protective outer jacket for safety. They're a solid choice for architectural outlines or landscape lighting where long, unbroken lines of light are the goal.

We do this every day. A huge amount of the 5050 LED strip we ship is built to a customer's specific drawing. Just send us your lengths—even a photo of a napkin sketch is fine—and what kind of connector you need. An engineer will send back a full wiring layout and parts list, usually within 12 hours. We can pre-solder leads of any length, attach connectors, and even pair it with the exact driver and controller. There's no fee for the consultation and no obligation to order.
