That's how a 12V WS2811 IC Programmable LED Strip is designed to work. The WS2811 is a driver chip that controls a group of LEDs as a single 'pixel'. On a 12V strip, that group is almost always 3 LEDs. It's a trade-off: you get the benefit of a higher voltage for longer runs, but you lose the one-LED-per-pixel control you'd see on a 5V WS2812B strip. For most architectural lighting like coves or accents, this grouped control looks perfectly smooth.
For you, the end user, there's practically no difference. The WS2811 and TM1903 (and its cousin, the UCS1903) are functionally identical chips from different manufacturers. They use the same single-wire data protocol, so they respond to the same controller signals. In software libraries like FastLED or WLED, you'll use the 'WS2811' setting for all of them. We stock both based on supply, but you can use them interchangeably in your project.
It depends. If you need dynamic color effects, a WS2811 programmable LED strip is a great choice. But for accurately judging colors in artwork, a standard RGB strip isn't ideal because its 'white' light has a low Color Rendering Index (CRI). For the best lights for an art studio, you'd want high-CRI tunable white strips that let you adjust the color temperature without sacrificing color accuracy. You need a dedicated digital or 'pixel' controller that speaks the WS2811's language. A standard 4-pin RGB controller won't work. Your options range from DIY microcontrollers like an Arduino or ESP32 (running WLED is very popular) to pre-built SPI controllers. Nine times out of ten, this is a data or grounding problem, not a faulty strip. First, check that you have a solid ground wire running from the power supply to both the strip AND your controller. A shared ground is critical. Second, your data wire might be too long or running next to power lines, picking up noise. Keep the data line as short as possible. For longer runs, 24V is almost always the better choice. A 24V WS2811 LED light strip suffers from less voltage drop, meaning you can run a longer single piece before you need to inject power. The tradeoff is that 24V strips usually have a longer cut-point (e.g., every 6 LEDs instead of every 3 on a 12V strip). If you need to cut the strip to very precise, short lengths, 12V might be better. For anything over 5 meters, go with 24V.

While the low-level timing is complex, you absolutely do not need to be an expert to use it. Fantastic software libraries like FastLED for Arduino or all-in-one firmware like WLED handle the entire protocol for you. You just use simple commands like 'set pixel 10 to blue'.
