Side Emitting LED Strip (also known as Side Light or Side View LED Strip) is an edge lighting solution where the LED light-emitting surface is located on the side of the strip and the light is parallel to the PCB board. Side Light LED Strips provide illumination along the edge without causing glare or shadows. It is used for a variety of applications requiring directional illumination, such as shelf lighting, display lighting, cabinet lighting, signage and lettering, architectural lighting, and automotive accent lighting.

There are two types of Side Lit LED Strips, SMD and COB. The biggest difference between them is the presence or absence of hot spots. COB side-illuminated light strips with uniform backlight side LEDs create continuous LED light.

Frequently Asked Questions About Side Emitting LED Strip Lights

Got a question before you buy? As an application engineer here for over a decade, I've probably answered it. Here are the most common ones we get for side-fire strips.

It's all about how the light looks. A side emitting SMD strip has visible dots of light from each individual LED chip. A side emitting COB strip has the chips bonded directly to the strip and covered in a continuous line of silicone, so you get a completely seamless, dot-free side glow. If the strip itself will be visible, or if it's lighting up a highly reflective surface, COB is the way to go.

You use a side emitting LED strip when you need the light to shoot sideways, parallel to the mounting surface. Think of edge-lighting a piece of acrylic so the whole panel glows, tucking it into a tiny ceiling cove, outlining signage, or placing it on top of a cabinet to wash light across the ceiling. A regular strip would just point up and you'd see dots; a side-fire strip hides the source and projects the light.

On our side emitting LED strips, the positive side is always marked right on the flexible PCB, usually with a '+' symbol next to the copper solder pad. If there's no plus sign, the voltage marking like '12V' or '24V' is almost always printed along the positive trace. It's a very common mistake to reverse the polarity, which may damage the strip.

For any side firing LED strip run longer than a few meters, 24V is the better choice. It allows you to run double the length of a 12V strip before voltage drop becomes an issue, which means less wiring. Since 24V systems carry the same power with half the current, you can also use slightly thinner wires. We stock a huge range of 24V power supplies specifically for these kinds of projects.

With an addressable side emitting strip, often called pixel or RGBIC tape, each LED can be controlled individually. This means you can create flowing rainbow waves, chasing effects, meteor trails, and complex animations where the light seems to move along the edge of an object. They're fantastic for dynamic retail displays, trade show booths, and custom lighting art. You'll need an addressable SPI controller to generate the patterns.

This is a key point people miss. A side emitting LED strip bends easily in the direction it coils up, like a roll of tape. You can wrap it around a gentle curve or circle. However, it does *not* bend well on its flat axis—you can't make a sharp 90-degree turn to outline a square. For that, you need to cut the strip and use a connector or wire, or choose one of our S-Type zig-zag strips which are designed for sharp corners.

You have a lot of choices. For a single color side emitting strip, we stock standard whites like warm (2700K-3000K), neutral (4000K), and cool (6000K). We also have static colors like red, green, blue, and amber. If you want to adjust the shade of white, we have tunable white CCT strips that let you blend warm and cool white to get the perfect tone.
