How to Apply Heat Shrink Tubing

  1. Select the correct size tubing. It should be able to slide over your connection but be no more than twice the diameter of the wire/joint.
  2. Cut a piece of tubing slightly longer than the exposed wire or solder joint you need to cover.
  3. Before making the final connection (soldering), slide the piece of tubing onto one of the wires.
  4. Complete your solder connection and allow it to cool slightly.
  5. Slide the heat shrink tubing so it is centered over the entire exposed joint.
  6. Using a heat gun, apply heat evenly around the tubing. Rotate the wire to ensure all sides shrink uniformly until the tubing is tight and secure.
⚠ Precautions
  • Always keep the heat source moving to prevent scorching the tubing or damaging the wire insulation.
  • Allow the tubing to cool completely before handling to ensure a rigid, durable seal.
  • While this tubing provides excellent moisture resistance, for fully submersible waterproof applications, use adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing or apply a silicone sealant.

Q: What size heat shrink tube do I need for my 10mm LED strip?

A:For a 10mm wide strip, a 12mm or 15mm width tube is recommended. This provides enough room to slide over the connection and ensures a tight seal after shrinking.

Q: Is this tubing waterproof?

A:This tubing provides excellent moisture and splash resistance. For a fully submersible (IP68) seal, we recommend using adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing or applying silicone sealant inside before shrinking.

Q: What is the best tool to shrink the tube?

A:A heat gun is the ideal tool as it provides even, controllable heat. For small jobs, a high-power hairdryer or the barrel of a soldering iron (used with extreme care not to touch the tube) can also work.

Q: Can I use this for 4-pin RGB LED strips?

A:Absolutely. Our larger widths (e.g., 15mm and up) are perfectly suited for covering the wider solder joints on 4-pin RGB and 5-pin RGBW LED strips.

Q: What is the benefit of the clear heat shrink tubing?

A:The transparent (clear) option is excellent for quality control, as it allows you to visually inspect the solder joint after shrinking to confirm it's secure and properly insulated.
